Company Information

  • Business Information The Korea Development Bank (KDB) was established in 1954 to promote industrial development and national economic growth in the Republif of Korea. Over the past seven decades, it has played a vital role in leading the development of industries and the economy by timely responding to the demands of the times, such as leading economic reconstruction after the Korean War, securing national growth engines in industries, and performing the role of a market stabilizer and safety net. As a leading policy finance institution mandated with climate bank, KDB is leading the country’s achieving carbon neutrality and a genuine green growth by 2050. To achieve carbon neutrality and foster green industries, KDB has established a dedicated product system that provides preferential rates of interest for the four priority support areas of energy transition, low-carbon industrial structure, nurturing green SMEs, and creating an eco-friendly society. In particular, the "KDB Carbon Spread" and "KDB Carbon Net Zero" products, funded by the government's climate responsive funds and the bank's own funds, provide bold preferential rates of interest and execute secondary loans to supply long-term and large-scale patience capital to areas such as carbon reduction facility construction, hydrogen infrastructure, and carbon capture and utilization. KDB is performing its role as a market creator and promoter of the green finance industry by providing capital to the green sector. It is taking the lead in building the institutional foundation for creating a desirable green finance market, such as by introducing a leading-edge lending system based on the Korean Green Classification System to assess the greenness of planned projects and implementing pre- and post-verification procedures for carbon reduction impacts to avoid greenwashing. Moreover, KDB has issued the largest amount of KRW-denominated green bonds among Korean banks, and it has also established a platform for ESG P-CBO liquidity programs, expanding access to ESG bond markets from large corporations to small and medium-sized enterprises. KDB is leading the way with various global institutions beyond Korea towards a carbon-neutral agenda. As the first and only accredited financial institution in Korea by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), a UN-affiliated international climate finance organization, KDB supports overseas climate change projects across developing countries. In addition, KDB has adopted the Equator Principles, a global standard framework for minimizing environmental destruction and social conflict risks in financing projects, as the first financial institution in Korea in 2017, and is operating the environmental and social assessment system. Since 2021, KDB has been selected as Asia’s representative institution of the Equator Principles Association’s Steering Committee to support the capacity enhancement of member institutions globally. Furthermore, KDB strengthens global cooperation and solidarity in green finance, such as hosting a special green finance session at the P4G (Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030) 2021 summit, providing IR opportunities for promising domestic green startups in front of global investors through 'Green Finance Next Round,' and holding the Asia Sustainable Finance Forum 2022 for industry-academic cooperation with Stanford University and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Based on these leading green finance performance, KDB has established itself as a national policy and financial institution supporting Korea's carbon neutrality and green growth, winning the Minister of Environment Award for Excellent Green Finance Company in 2021 and the Financial Services Commission Chairman Award for Korea Green Climate in 2023. In the future, KDB will play a role as a national climate finance bank that leads Korea's carbon-neutral green growth by strengthening support for green industries, promoting the spread of green ecosystems, and enhancing infrastructure nationwide. Carbon neutrality is the path that we must take, although it is a path that no one has seen before. KDB will lead the way for Korea's green and carbon neutral leap.
